Dustin Johnson What's in the Bag? (2023)

Dustin Johnson What's in the Bag? (2023)

Posted by GolfBox on 24th Feb 2023

For a golfer who seems nonplussed about most things out on the course, two-time major winner Dustin Johnson isn’t quite so nonchalant when it comes to choosing his golf clubs.

Big Dusty’s best is almost unbeatable and his long, fluid swing generates effortless power. He used it to great effect at the 2020 Masters, playing some unbelievable golf to win the green jacket by five strokes. And in the process, Johnson recorded the lowest winning total in Masters history at 20-under par

A former world No.1 and FedEx Cup champion, the laidback American joined the LIV Tour in 2022 and captained his 4Aces team to win the inaugural team championship. DJ’s most recent win came at LIV Tulsa and despite his big game, he generally lets his clubs do the talking.

What clubs does Dustin Johnson use:

WITB UPDATE 24/02/2023: Dustin switches to TaylorMade Stealth 2 Three Wood (LIV Mayakoba)

WITB Dustin Johnson - May 2023

Let's take a look what's inside Dustin Johnson's bag:

DUSTIN JOHNSON DRIVER

TaylorMade Stealth Plus Driver

TAYLORMADE STEALTH PLUS+ (10.5°)

For a long hitter like DJ, the TaylorMade Stealth Plus+ driver is right in his wheelhouse. While he is yet to play the newer Stealth 2 driver, the big drawcard for Stealth Plus is its carbon fibre face.

Comprised of 60 layers of carbon fibre and bound with a nanotexture coating, the face is 44 per cent lighter than titanium and minimises energy wastage at impact.

The result is more ball speed and extra distance, which Big Dusty laps up off the tee. The Stealth Plus+ is also more forgiving and consistent, with off-centre strikes travelling further and straighter and spin rates reliably even in both damp and dry conditions.

And importantly for a feel player like DJ, TaylorMade spent considerable time tuning the impact acoustics of the carbon fibre face to make the Stealth Plus+ driver sound and feel exceptional.

A Fujikura Speeder 661 X prototype shaft is the perfect foil for Dustin Johnson’s immense speed and power with the driver.

WITB UPDATE 24/02/2023: DJ made the upgrade to the new TaylorMade Stealth 2 fairway in his three wood but sticks with the older model Stealth in his seven wood. He chose to play the larger headed standard Stealth 2 fairway, rather than the more compact Stealth 2 Plus, likely due to his preference for higher launching fairway woods. The Stealth 2’s V Steel sole and Twist Face combine with a lightweight carbon fibre crown to produce long and high-launching ball flights.

DJ’s seven wood provides an effective distance gap filler between his 3 wood and 3 iron. DJ has LA Golf shafts matched to both his 3 wood and 7 wood.

DJ also puts a TaylorMade Stealth rescue in the bag from time to time and with a V Steel sole, Speed Pocket and Twist Face, it’s a weapon of precision. The Stealth model is bigger and more fairway wood-like than the Stealth Plus+ rescue and is the long iron replacement DJ calls on when needed.

DUSTIN JOHNSON IRONS

TAYLORMADE P730 IRONS – DJ PROTOTYPE (3-PW)

It makes perfect sense that Dustin has a full set of TaylorMade P730 irons in his bag; after all, they’re designed for the best ball strikers in the game. His irons are traditional forged blades that offer supreme feedback and feel but you have to find the sweet spot consistently – something Big Dusty does almost automatically.

Dustin’s P730 prototypes, fitted with True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 shafts, were the inspiration behind the new TaylorMade P7MB irons, which have now replaced the P730 model.

DUSTIN JOHNSON WEDGES

 TAYLORMADE MILLED GRIND 3 WEDGES

When you drive the ball as close to the green as Dustin Johnson does, the wedges are going to get a serious workout.

Dustin uses the original TaylorMade Milled Grind wedges, with both a 52˚ and 60˚ model in his bag. While they are the predecessor to TaylorMade’s newer Milled Grind 3 wedges, they feature the same milling process that creates precision consistency on the sole grinds and sharp grooves for spin and control.

DUSTIN JOHNSON PUTTER

 TAYLORMADE SPIDER GT PUTTER

Dustin has been a TaylorMade Spider fan for most of his career and is currently playing one of the latest members to join the Spider web: the Spider GT.

The Spider GT features the famous Spider “fangs”, which distribute mass to the perimeter of the putter head to increase stability.

It also features a Pureroll 2 insert, which provides a soft but solid feel off the face and promotes top spin to get putts tracking on target quicker.

DJ has a SuperStroke 2.0 grip and LA Golf shaft fitted to his TaylorMade Spider X putter.

DUSTIN JOHNSON GOLF BALL

TAYLORMADE 2021 TP5X GOLF BALL

The TaylorMade TP5X ball is slightly firmer than the TP5 and is perfectly suited to Dustin’s game. It is designed to complement high-swing speeds by lowering spin rates for the driver, creating a more penetrating ball flight.

And full iron shots launch higher and have a steeper descent angle with the TP5X, which is an ideal trait when Dustin is spearing his P730 long irons into the green.
