Callaway Steelhead XR Fairway Wood | GolfBox Reviews

Posted by Alex Etches on 12th Jun 2017

I had the absolute pleasure of reviewing the  Callaway Steelhead XR Fairway Wood for GolfBox Reviews - Youtube and it didn't disappoint.

It's a fantastic feeling, knowing that you're one of the first to post a review on a highly anticipated Golf Product. It's also pretty scary as you don't know the full story of the product and the innovations included - as the internet only holds predictions and rumours at that stage. At this point, you, the audience already have an opinion on the product having read the latest article. With this in mind, I try and imagine every demographic and ability of golfers that will potentially be watching my review - will you like, or will you hate it? The  Callaway XR Steelhead made that question very easy to answer.

Originating in the early 2000's, the  Steelhead instantly became the dream club, with everyone at my club either having one or wanting one. It was as much of a fashion accessory as Stewart Payne's bright pants. The thing I remember strongly about it was the look, sound and I always found it strange that the shaft appeared through the end of the head. You wouldn't see that nowadays!

We've had a few clubs revisited in the past few years but this felt different. It feels more complete and it really does look like the original. Well, a modern-original.

At address, you'll notice a blue pattern on the crown of the club which does give this club that '2017 edge'. It also feels quite short, and strangely it isn't. It's the same as any current fairway wood but the fact it looks shorter at address gives me confidence to hopefully find a fairway or hit a green.

It was an impressive review. Maybe the only downside for me was the backspin rates, as they were on the high side of average. Which is great for keeping the ball in play but not ideal for distances.

HOWEVER, I will be getting one of these for my bag (Maybe a Steelhead XR 3 Wood). Those few minutes were enough to pursued me. I think with a fitted shaft this thing could be my new best friend.
