Mizuno JPX-900 Driver - Review

Mizuno JPX-900 Driver - Review

Posted by Alex Etches on 8th Sep 2016

I would like you to imagine a really, really adjustable Driver. One that is very forgiving and long. Then, add a 'splash' of Blue to the mix and you have The Mizuno JPX-900 Driver.

The seriously impressive aspect of the New JPX-900, is the ability for it to be altered to suit any range of golfer. From low to high handicappers, longer to shorter hitters, Luke Donald or even Donald Duck. It is a golf 'swiss army knife'.

'NEW' Weighting-system

This new weighting-system cannot be missed and it's easy to see why it's a major part of the 2016 Mizuno story. When you first see it, you may feel overwhelmed with all the different weights and slots, but the adjustment process is actually must simpler than what your first impression may be.

As mentioned in our (GolfBox Reviews) YouTube review, the JPX-900 would not look of out place in the latest Transformers movie. This is largely down to the two 8 gram weights that can be positioned to create the perfect set-up.

Almost endless combinations, allow you to fine-tune Spin, launch and even shot shapes down to the smallest of margins. To really personalise the ball flight characteristics for your individual needs.

This gives the JPX-900 much more fitting options than the previous adjustable 850 model.

'NEW' Face-angle sole plate

The base of the driver has received a lot of attention, thanks to this 'little' silver plate. Which is located towards the heel side of the sweet-spot.

This innovation slides into different positions and changes the face angle at address up to 4 degrees. Moving the weight towards the club face, closes the head. Consequently, moving the weight the other direction (towards the back of the driver) opens the face. For this to be affective, the head needs to be resting on the ground at address.

Multi-Thickeness face

It always sounds a little 'strange' when manufacturers mention the production of a club face that features different thicknesses. Nevertheless, this actually benefits our bad shots. Resulting in an increase of coefficient of restitution (COR) across the face. Especially, on toe and heel strikes for improved forgiveness. Making this considerably more forgiving that the previous JPX-850 Driver.

Adjustable hosel

The JPX-900 features a 450cc head capacity that is slightly smaller than the maximum allowance of 460cc. This gives the golfer an ideal balance of control and distance, allowing them to execute their strategy successfully.

Like most adjustable Golf Drivers, the head of the JPX-900 can be removed and re-installed in different loft or lie settings, ranging from 7.5 degrees to 11.5.

Harmonic Impact Technology

There is nothing worse than hitting a driver 'out of the screws', to then hear a terribly blunt sound coming from the head. This takes away a slight sense of achievement.

With this information, Mizuno have re-introduced the Harmonic Impact Technology (HIT) that harmonically  congratulates you by producing a fantastic and satisfying sound at impact. I will even go as far to say that the bad strikes with the JPX-900, sound as good as the good strikes on competitive drivers.

FIRST IMPRESSION

* I thought it looked pretty similar to the JPX-850 (not a bad thing). So, I thought it would perform very similar too.

* It FEELS shorter than most standard drivers at address, which I think will appeal more to better players. As you naturally feel more in-control of the golf ball-the shorter the shaft.

LAST IMPRESSION (After GolfBox Review)

* 'Blown away' by the distance of the club. It really does fly.

* The acoustics were everything that Mizuno promised: A loud, but crisp noise that echoed in our fitting net.
