Mizuno’s latest incarnation of their popular tear drop-shaped wedge, the T22, makes plenty of promises.

More spin. More sole grind options. And more of the famous Mizuno forged feel.

Promises can quickly decay into the empty kind if they’re not backed up. But with Mizuno’s T22 wedge, it seems a promise really is a promise.

THINNER TOP EDGE

Building on what its predecessor, the T20, began, the T22 doesn’t exactly reinvent the wheel - on the outside at least.

After all, why change something if it’s not broken?

But the T22 is slightly more compact, which seems to strengthen its tear-drop stylings, and there’s also some been some intricate bevelling work carried out around the T22’s top edge.

While it makes the top edge thinner, further enhancing the T22’s player’s wedge credentials, it’s not just about looks.

The thinner, tapered blade edge delivers a more penetrating trajectory and more consistent spin.

COPPER LAYER

Exploring the subtle details of the new T22 wedge reveals why you can take Mizuno’s performance promise to the bank.

Beneath the T22’s nickel-chrome plating lies an ultra-thin layer of copper, which according to Mizuno delivers an extra split-second of control when the ball first contacts, then departs, the face.

Then there’s the T22’s forged Boron-infused steel, which is grain flow forged by Mizuno to provide tasty levels of feel and touch around the green.

Loft-specific Quad Cut grooves are milled into the T22’s face, with the high-strength properties of Boron keeping the edges of the grooves sharper for longer, effectively increasing the lifespan of the wedges.

And when it gets damp, Mizuno’s HydroFlow micro grooves get to work.

The etched, textured HydroFlow face pattern allows moisture to be released when trapped between the ball and face at impact, leading to increased grip and spin in wet conditions.

GRINDS AND FINISHES

Mizuno T22 wedges are available in three finishes -  Satin ChromeDenim Copper and Raw. The polarising Blue Ion finish that featured in the previous T20 model has been dropped.

There’s the standard satin chrome, an intriguing new denim copper and the now obligatory raw wedge option, which doesn’t feature the thin copper layer but will rust over time.

The T22 wedge line-up also sees an expanded range of four grind options, including an all-new X-grind.

The S, D, C and X grinds all measure up under a variety of conditions and swings:

  • S grind: is gamed on the lower lofted T22 wedges and with a low-key level of relief, is well suited to full shots.
  • D grind: features moderate relief taken out of the heel and toe, allowing the face to be opened or closed easily.
  • C grind: is aimed at skilled players, with its heavy heel and toe relief also suited to firm conditions.
  • X grind: recommended only for short game magicians, it features extreme heel and toe relief and low bounce.
