TaylorMade Spider 5K-ZT Zero-Torque Putter

Posted by GolfBox on 29th May 2025

Finally! TaylorMade dip their toes in the zero-torque category with the launch of the new Spider 5K-ZT putter.

TaylorMade have certainly taken their sweet time perfecting design of the Spider 5K-ZT mallet. But the wait has been more than worth it. The ZT stands for zero-torque while the 5K represents the putter’s Moment of Inertia, or its resistance to twisting. And 5K of MOI is about as good as it gets for a putter.

Zero-torque, toe-up balance combined with high-MOI stability. What more could you ask for in a putter?

SPIDER SENSIBILITY, NOW IN ZERO-TORQUE

The Spider is TaylorMade’s most famous putter. Its distinctive mallet shape is highly recognisable, and its performance is legendary.

Spider DNA is evident in the new Spider 5K-ZT. However, the 5K-ZT has a much more angular shape and also boasts a unique sole curvature designed to accommodate different player types and ball positions.

But the highlight of the Spider 5K-ZT is its centre-shafted set-up. A KBS putter shaft is offset 25mm behind the face in a slightly toeward position and bored into the putter head at a 1° lean angle to create the putter’s zero-torque performance.

The TaylorMade Spider 5K-ZT is available in standard, counter-balanced and broomstick configurations.

PURE ROLL INSERT

While TaylorMade have done things differently design-wise to achieve zero-torque performance, they’ve stuck with what they know on the Spider 5K-ZT's face.

It features a Pure Roll insert, which provides a soft yet precise feel identical to the rest of the Spider range.

The Pure Roll insert consists of an aluminium backing plate infused with a serving of Surlyn. The face grooves on the Spider 5K-ZT are cut at a 45° angle, a design that holds the ball on the face longer and prevents back spin being generated at impact. It promotes a forward roll to get the ball tracking on line for more consistent speed and improved accuracy.

TaylorMade’s True Path alignment system also appears on the Spider 5K-ZT, although it’s been tinkered with to provide a more premium appearance.

True Path’s ball-width lines are milled into the topline of the Spider 5K-ZT mallet head, providing a visual reference point that helps golfers line up their putts with precision.

WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT THE SPIDER 5K-ZT MALLET?

Should you consider playing a zero-torque putter like the TaylorMade Spider 5K-ZT?

The zero-torque concept eliminates rotation of the putter face during a stroke. It guarantees the putter face remains square to the target throughout the stroke — regardless of the club path — which improves accuracy and consistency out on the greens.

So how do zero torque putters work? Essentially, it comes down to the putter’s balance point creating a toe-up position. In the case of the Spider 5K-ZT, an offset, centre-shafted configuration powers the stable, zero-torque design.
