Taylormade TP5 and TP5x Golf Balls
TaylorMade are confident their new TP5 and TP5x golf balls will be one giant leap for golfers all over the world.
In the mysterious world of golf ball design, a happy compromise between spin rate, aerodynamic drag and launch angle usually has to be found in order to optimise a ball's performance off the tee, while still being subtle enough around the green.
But with the new TP5 and TP5x, TaylorMade have made a ball that doesn’t compromise. It is longer off the tee than the previous Tour Preferred model but still retains an incredibly precise and peerless soft feel around the green.
But the biggest "wow factor" has been the ball’s increased performance with irons: TaylorMade announced the TP5 is a half to full club longer with mid irons, achieved by reducing spin.
The key to this improved performance is the five layers that comprise the TP5: three layers in the “Tri-Fast core” and two in the “ Dual-Spin” cover.
The “ Tri-Fast” core melds together three separate components: a very low compression mantle which is then covered in two consecutive layers of increasingly softer material. It is a ball within a ball so to speak, but TaylorMade’s new core technology reduces spin and improves the transfer of energy off the clubface to launch faster, translating into a longer ball.
With the core packing the speed on and keeping the spin rate down, the “ Dual-Spin” cover is where the softness is built back into the TP5 for use with the shorter irons. It has a soft cast urethane outer cover covered in 322 dimples, which backs onto a more rigid inner cover. When these two surfaces interact, it creates a pinching effect which ratchets up some serious spin and retains the TP5's soft feel.
So how does a ball that, when struck by a mid iron, goes further, launches faster and spins less in the air still stop on the green like a butterfly with sore feet? TaylorMade have increased the TP5’s launch angle, creating a stronger trajectory with the mid irons. This creates a greater peak shot height by using less spin, and the resulting fall back to earth is steeper - and that is critical to the TP5’s stopping power on the greens.
And throw in the fact that due to the TP5’s increased distance a seven iron may now fly as far as a six iron, every golfer will undoubtedly receive a welcome boost in confidence and consistency. After all, who doesn’t feel more confident having a shorter iron in the hand when sizing up an approach shot?
The TP5x has a 90 compression to suit players looking for greater gains in distance while the TP5 is slightly softer at 83 and is more suited to those seeking a softer feel all round.
The TP5 and TP5x have recently been put into play by TaylorMade tour professionals and the results speak for themselves.
In January, Spanish slugger Jon Rahm posted his first PGA Tour win in the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego using the TP5x while countryman Sergio Garcia won the Dubai Desert Classic on the European Tour in February using the TP5 golf ball.
Not a bad introduction for a new golf ball, but it just gets better.
Using the TP5x, Dustin Johnson romped to a five-shot victory in California last month and in the process vaulted to the world No.1 position . He leapfrogged fellow TaylorMade staff member and TP5x disciple, Jason Day who is currently the world No.2.
DJ followed up with another win in the WGC Mexico tournament this month using the TP5x.
