Joaquin Niemann What's in the Bag? (2024)
Posted by GolfBox on 28th Nov 2024
Hello Niemann! Chilean young gun Joaquin Niemann has single-mindedly forced his way into the public consciousness with a run of searing hot form in 2024. Niemann has been holding court at the game’s top level since he turned pro as the world No.1 amateur in 2018. His swing is one of the coolest around, the Gumby-like flexibility and bowed over posture at impact fun to watch.
A two-time winner on the PGA Tour, Niemann joined the LIV Tour in 2022 and is the captain of the South American-aligned Torque GC. He won the Australian Open in late 2023 before winning twice in quick succession in early 2024 at LIV Mayakoba and LIV Jeddah.
What clubs does Joaquin Niemann use?
Let's take a look what's inside Joaquin Niemann's bag:
JOAQUIN NIEMANN DRIVER
PING G430 LST DRIVER (10.5°)
Ranked in the top five in driving distance, Joaquin uses a PING G430 LST driver to knock it past just about everyone on the LIV Tour. Joaquin’s LST driver has the most compact head of the four-model range (440cc) and it allows him to cultivate a fade or draw the ball off the tee with ease.
LST stands for Low Spin Technology and a CarbonFly Wrap on the driver’s crown is mostly responsible for its low-spinning, low-launching ball flight.
The lightweight wrap expands into the driver’s heel and toe zones, saving weight and lowering the centre of gravity to increase ball speed, cut spin and increase stability. Niemann has his PING G430 LST driver paired with a Graphite Design DI 6-X shaft.
PING G430 MAX FAIRWAY (3W: 15°)
Joaquin carries a couple of PING fairway woods in his bag and the pairing offers a heady mix of firepower and forgiveness. His three wood is a PING G430 MAX fairway. Like Joaquin’s driver, it features a CarbonFly Wrap on the crown that allows extra mass to be positioned deep in the head to optimise the centre of gravity. A large rear sole weight on the back perimeter increases stability and forgiveness and helps generate high-launching ball flights.
PING G425 MAX FAIRWAY (7W: 20.5°)
Joaquin’s older G425 MAX seven wood offers similar performance to his three wood but doesn’t feature the CarbonFly Wrap. However, it’s a club that isn’t easily replaced; Joaquin has it dialled in to fly a specific distance.
A PING G430 hybrid is Joaquin’s long iron substitute, a club that enlivens his long game with its extravaganza of speed and distance. The G430 hybrid also launches high and stops softly, making Joaquin’s task of finding the green from long range much easier. It’s the perfect gap-filling club between Joaquin’s seven wood and five iron. But the club can almost be viewed the most versatile in Joaquin’s bag; it has been called upon many times to play exquisite bump-and-run shots from the greenside rough.
PING BLUEPRINT S IRONS (5-PW)
PING’s Blueprint S irons allow Joaquin’s artistry and creativity to flourish on the golf course.Blueprint S irons are player’s irons geared for workability and control. Their thin topline and compact head size gives Joaquin the ability to shape and flight the ball at will. However, the cavity back construction and perimeter weighting of the Blueprint S irons provide a fair dosage of forgiveness to Joaquin’s iron game.
The 3-5 irons in the Blueprint S range have also been imbued with what PING refer to as "precision pocket forging". It creates a void in the cavity that saves 10g of weight, with the mass redistributed to create higher launching long irons, extra distance and greater stability.
PING S159 WEDGES (52°, 56°, 60°)
Joaquin’s trio of PING S159 wedges are the weapons he relies on to display his extraordinary short game skill. He uses his 52° model mostly for full approach shots but his 56° and 60° models are designed to dazzle around the greens.
PING S159 wedges are traditionally shaped tour wedges that exude a soft feel. Lofts 46-52° feature milled grooves with maximum volume that enhance spin rates for full shots. Higher-lofted PING S159 wedges (54°-62°) are milled with shallower grooves that are more tightly spaced on the face. PING have also included a new MicroMax texture in between the grooves that helps impart more spin around the greens.
A PING Anser putter has been a constant companion for Joaquin Niemann throughout his amateur days and professional career. His current PLD Anser is about as traditional a modern putter gets. It features a plumber’s neck hosel, single sightline on the top and a milled face. The PING PLD putter family is comprised of tour-validated head shapes that deliver consistent speed control. They are also tuned acoustically for a luscious impact sound, an attribute Joaquin admitted is one of the things he loves about his putter.
TITLEIST PRO V1x GOLF BALL
The 2023 Titleist Pro V1x is the ball Joaquin Niemann has deemed as best suited for him to get around the course in the fewest shots possible. The four-layer ProV1x is spinnier and flies higher than the three-layer Titleist Pro V1. It also features a firmer compression and feel, which helps Joaquin off the tee with extra distance but retains plenty of spin for his shorter irons and shots played closer to the green.
